We had a conference yesterday even though school is out. I didn't get an official word on moving Alex up a grade but I got a ton of data. A TON! I am having a hard time processing all this new information and what it may or may not mean.
What I learned is there is a Iowa Acceleration Scale Form that is used in our state. What this form does is looks at your student in 5 different areas and depending on the score helps determine if your student is an excellent, good, marginal or not recommended for acceleration. The five areas are AAAA (academic ability, ability, aptitude and achievement), school and academic factors, developmental, interpersonal skills, and attitude and support.
Each of the areas has a point system. For the achievement part it is hard to argue with the points based on scores to two different tests. Some of the other areas are subjective and well I just don't like some of the questions. You get more points if you have no siblings, You get less points if you aren't in a lot of extra curricular activities, you get more points if you have a good attitude toward learning. The extra curricular activities one kills me because it is based on school provided activities. Alex would love to be in robotics but it is only offered to third - fifth grade. She got a low score not because she isn't interested but because of her grade level. I am glad that we (parents) got points for support. Makes up for the extra curricular points.
Overall we got all the numbers we needed for an excellent candidate for acceleration. Even if I don't agree with everything. Now we wait a little longer. This process is not easy and again I know that the teachers and principal are working "overtime" on this for more than just my child but other kids as well. I had a conference when school is out for the summer which seems so crazy but I love our school and it shows their dedication to getting the best for every student.
Fact ~ Alex rocked the second grade achievement test and she just finished first grade. It is nice as a mom to see actual data that proves what you have been saying for two years and that I indeed do not have on what I call, love goggles.
So now we wait for the letter.
